The Salt Storehouses can be considered as the most interesting example of industrial architecture in Cervia's territory.
It consists of two buildings, the Tower Storehouse and the Docks Storehouse, which are situated in the historical centre of Cervia, one on the right and one on the left side of the canal coming from the saltpans.
The Tower Storehouse, opposite St Michael's Tower, is one of the oldest buildings in town, in fact its construction began in 1689 and finished in 1691, that is before the construction of New Cervia.
At that time the importance of the town was already based on the salt, its most precious good, for whose protection and conservation from possible robberies they had planned the construction of a huge storehouse near the sea.
It was built on the decision of the treasurer of Romagna, Michelangelo Maffei, and it was entirely made of bricks and clay. It could contain 100,000 to 130,000 quintals of salt, spread in its 66 mt length and 6 mt width. It has a monumental, massive inner space and a romanic basilica-pattern structure, divided into three naves to better contain the large deals of salt. Nowadays it holds cultural events.
The Docks Storehouse was built in 1712 also with the purpose of containing big amounts of salt.
It is situated in the square called Piazzale dei Salinari and it was built re-utilizing the construction material coming from the demolition of Old Cervia. At present, yet restored, it is not used for any purpose.
Accessible by public and private transport.
