Cervia is the first town in the Romagna region and in the regional coast to have received the ISO 14001 environment certification for "the planning, management, implementation and control of the activities pertaining to the Municipal Administration". Such an important goal was achieved after the ispection performed by the Italian Shipping Registry (Rina) of Genoa on 5th and 6th May 2005.
The certification was reconfermed in 2008 after a new inspection for other three years.
Five intermediate steps were set in order to get the certification, involving the Municipal Administration, Hera (Local Water and Gas Supply Industry) and the business associations. The main goals are: quantification of the waste collected through monthly checks by Hera; creation of an ecological area in Pisignano; involvement of the hotels and restaurants of Milano Marittima in the organic waste collection (special bins will be supplied), arrangement and monitoring of a plan for the waste collection and public awareness campaign. The same measures will be taken by the municipal administration, Hera and associations with regards to glass collection in the beach bars. The fifth objective aims at the rationalization and strengthening of paper disposal in the municipal offices.
