Made in New York - Keith Haring and Paolo Buggiani
The exhibition aims to discover where street art originated, who the protagonists were and to reconstruct a path of places and works that lie at the root of this phenomenon.
Keith Haring
This form of art was born in New York at the end of the 1970s, in an environment in full cultural ferment, and it was in this context that Keith Haring, in his early twenties, decided to use the Manhattan underground as a place to experiment with his art.
His favourite surfaces are the black cards covering expired advertisements. His simple, linear figures, drawn with white chalk, invaded the New York underground between 1980 and 1985 and soon became known all over the world.
Paolo Buggiani
The Tuscan artist Paolo Buggiani still lives between Italy and New York. It was there, between the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s, that he created performances with a political content, destined to cause a stir but also beauty. Among the friends who, like him, considered the metropolis as a museum in which to create their works, there was also Keith Haring.
As proof of their friendship, a precious drawing by Haring shows a man with wings and a dedication: FOR PAOLO. From that moment on, Buggiani's flying character would become one of the pictorial subjects of the genius from Kutztown, where Haring's family moved to live soon after his birth.
Buggiani was the first to realise the potential of the drawings of his artist friend and to save about fifty Subway Drawings from certain destruction by removing them from the walls before they were covered with new posters.
Works on display
On display are about 20 original works by Keith Haring, created on the walls of the underground between 1981 and 1983. The exhibition is completed by more than 30 pieces on Paolo Buggiani's projects in New York.
On the occasion of the exhibition Paolo Buggiani is exhibiting some of his animals made of light metal: crocodiles, snakes and other reptiles. Two of his crocodiles will be exhibited in an outdoor setting and The Minotaur and Icarus will complete the exhibition
Paolo Buggiani was the first to realise the value of street art as a social and linguistic phenomenon. On display are dozens of photographs of his performances and installations in New York
