The Borgo dei Salinari (Saltworkers' town area) is included inside the ancient walls of Old Cervia, but more properly it builds up an extension of these walls.
In fact the houses of the saltworkers' families were built as a sort of protecting boundary wall, and the borgo is its natural appendage.
In 1697 the former inhabitants of Old Cervia in the middle of the saltpans, decimated by malaria and the other typical illnesses of the marshland, decided to move to a healthier place.
Most of the houses date back to the end of 1600, early 1700, they are small houses very similar to one-another, characterized by a very small, narrow portal. They consisted of a cellar, the living area and a loft.
